The Road to Dental Health

December 22, 2016 10:42 pm

Dental health is a lifelong journey. The journey is traveled by daily choices and decisions that can either propel you forward at a fast and healthy pace, or make you take roads that lead to dead ends. As you envision your daily journey, let’s relate it to signs you might see on a road that you travel.

Dental Green Lights

Green lights mean go, progress forward, and do not stop. When you think about your dental health here are some habits you want to continue going forward with. You should brush at least two times per day. You should floss daily. Continue eating a balanced diet including plenty of fruits and vegetables. Use dental products that contain fluoride, including toothpaste. Going to your dentist twice a year for cleanings and checkups is important on your journey.

Dental Yield Signs

When you spot a yield sign on the road, you immediately know you need to use caution as you progress. There are also dental habits that you need to yield to. Be sure to use caution when consuming snacks between meals. Snacking is not a bad thing; just make wise decisions when choosing what your snack will be. Remember that foods eaten as part of a meal cause less harm because the saliva released helps wash food from the mouth and lessen the effects of acids. Limit the number of sugar-filled candies and drinks.

Dental Stop Signs

There are several habits that you should consider stopping to promote a safe and happy dental journey. If your life journey includes, smoking, nail biting, drinking sodas, brushing too hard, or grinding your teeth, you should consider how you could stop these destructive habits. Each of these habits led you off the path to optimal dental health.
